This strap was displayed at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum in 2011. That is not a typo. A guitar strap. In a museum. This one.
We started with naked leather, dyed a rich brown, and set out to create a truly realistic interpretation of the Statue of Liberty. To get the copper right, we did something we are fairly confident has never been done before: we painted leather with liquid copper, then oxidized it to varying degrees to create a genuine copper patina directly on the leather surface. Lady Liberty's torch was treated the same way, then finished with oxidized hardware.
Lady Liberty herself was painstakingly cut from kidskin and layered for dimension, piece by piece, each one glued down then meticulously sewn with clear thread. David Karns (touring bass player and airbrush artist) airbrushed the flag, sky, and fireworks, adding shading to Lady Liberty to push the depth even further. Every single tiny leather piece was then sewn down by Bruk, with her usual perfection.
