We have made a lot of Grateful Dead straps. This one is among our favorites.
The base is belt leather airbrushed with blue skies by David Karns, our longtime collaborator and, not incidentally, a world class bass player. Getting airbrushed leather right took about a year to perfect. The paint has to flex and move with the leather without cracking or flaking off. We got there, and David's skies are a big part of why these straps look the way they do.
Bob Thomas's iconic Dancing Bears are recreated in kidskin leather overlays, layered over the airbrushed background. The result is exactly what it should be: joyful, colorful, and unmistakably Dead.
